The situation at the restaurant started off awkwardly with a sign on the door saying that it was "impromptu Sunday" which I later figured out meant that they weren't normally open on Sunday (despite what Yelp said at the time). The awkwardness continued when I walked to the counter and the gentleman there just looked at me. I opened the conversation by explaining that it was our first time there and asking if we ordered at the counter and then found a seat. He replied "no." Then I asked if we should tell him that there were 4 in our party and that we were looking for a table. He said "yes." So then I had to say "there are 4 in our party and we are looking for a table. I realize he was probably just having fun, but it put things off to a bad start. Out visit was based on some good yelp reviews and I should have looked further for recommendations on what to eat. Three of us had biscuits and gravy and one had the "panwich" (a breakfast sandwich made with a pancake and then cut into wedges with syrup for dipping.) We were all disappointed with the food. Extremely. I rarely add salt to my food. I started with pepper and then went for the salt. It helped a bit, but not much. The good news is that the prices were low, but I still didn't think it was worth it.

A very overdue shout out to this little place! I met a friend there for breakfast after reading other reviews. I drove from Lees Summit & wasn't disappointed. A unique menu, executed well. We got a chance to visit with one of the owners & he's a hoot! Also enjoyed getting to meet his wife, the brains behind the great food. I'll be back.

Limited menu (no French toast) but the panwich (pancake, egg and bacon sandwich) was amazing!! Lunch looks great too. The owner and staff were very friendly. This place is located in a strip mall so you have to drive around to find it - well worth the stop. Colleague had breakfast burrito and he said it was perfect.

Happened upon this little gem this morning! Had so time to kill while our daughter was at JCCC. The staff was great & the food was delicious! I am very discerning about biscuits & gravy (my husband is the master of biscuits & gravy) and these were very good! My husband loved his omelet as well! Definitely going back!

The food was great but the service was horrid. We sat outside since it was a nice day and our server (some old man) acted like we didn't exist. He came over to take our order and we didn't see him again after that. My military buddy asked him for a straw and he simply replied "aren't you in the army?". We had to go inside and ask the counter for more coffee since we sat there for 25 or so minutes waiting for him. He never did get that straw.

The pandwich was delish! I am picky about biscuits and gravy and it was VERY good! Great service. The restaurant it small so get there early. We will be back!

I loved my breakfast burrito. I brought my daughter and her friend and we all enjoyed our food. It's a very casual atmosphere but friendly service and food was good. I would come back again.

My wife and I discovered The Wooden Spoon several weeks ago, and immediately we were hooked! In my opinion, the owners of The Wooden Spoon have figured out the perfect business model... great people, great service, incredible food... end of story! Those are the reasons we've been back almost weekly ever since, and not once have we been disappointed. The place itself is tucked away in a little strip of shops just across the street from Johnson County Community College, so it's really easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for as you drive by. The inside of the restaurant is small and simple, with very little decor to speak of. This would usually be a negative in my book, but at The Wooden Spoon it doesn't seem to matter because the people are what give this place its amazing atmosphere and character. The restaurant is owned and operated by an incredible family, and they do a great job of making it feel as if you're a guest in their own home when you dine there. The wife is the chef and is responsible for the incredible breakfasts and lunches that are served throughout the day. The husband, on the other hand, runs the dining room and greatly adds to the overall experience with his outgoing personality and humor. Sometimes you'll even have the pleasure of being served by one of the their children. Regardless of who you meet when you're there, it's obvious that The Wooden Spoon is a labor of love for the entire family, and for those of us who have become regulars, it's really great to return and feel like you're catching up with old friends over a home-cooked meal. And that's what sets The Wooden Spoon apart from most other area restaurants, in my opinion. As for the food itself, I'm convinced that there's not a bad item on the menu, but my personal favorites for breakfast include the Deep-Fried Breakfast Burrito, the Breakfast Sandwich, and the Hash Brown Casserole. And for lunch, I highly recommend the Mexi-Cheesesteak... it's delicious! Can't wait to come back and explore even more of the menu!

Came across this gem with the help of Yelp. Within 4 minutes of opening the seating was all full, lucky us- we got a table. Great family owned business, great quality of food especially for the great competitive pricing. Will make this a regular stop when we are in town!

Very good! It's small so if you come a lunch, you may have to wait for a seat. I had the fried stuffed breakfast burrito and my daughter had the caramel macchiato pancakes. It's the food you will have dreams about! LOVE mom and pop places, and that is exactly what you get here. Great and comfortable environment.

I had read all the reviews talking about how great this place was, and was hopeful for somewhere new to try! But after going this morning with my son, sister and mom.... lets just say I was beyond disappointed! The waiter we had was RUDE! He was snippy towards my son and just rather short and rude with all of us. I ordered the hash brown casserole and when I asked I was told it was meat, cheese and hash browns. When we FINALLY got our order 40 minutes later (everyone that ordered after us got their food before us!) the casserole had onion in it... honestly that is all I tasted! Then the chocolate chocolate chip muffin was dry. I will not be returning there again! Poor service and not good food mad for a bad experience!

WOW, best omelet ever! And seriously the whole wheat toast is the best I have tasted. The service was so polite, family owned business. Gotta go there!

This was our second trip to the Wooden Spoon. Found their listing on Google, saw some good reviews and decided to give it a go. It's a small mom and pop kind of place, with not many tables. It is a great place to go on the weekday mornings as it's not very crowded. This time we stopped in Saturday morning, it was a popular place. We needed to wait abut 15 min to be seated, not too long. We ordered the baccon panwich & sandwich croissant. Felt like it took long for our food to arrive. Abut 25 min. The staff did their job, but didn't seem overly excited or helpful. Overall I like the mom & pop feel, good food & fair prices, but probably only someplace I would visit again on the week days.

Order a coffee and eggs. Waited an hour for my food nothing came out. Had 1 refill of coffee. People came in after me and they got their food before I did. Saw a person make a to go order 15 minutes after I got there, and they got their food first. Went to the front and asked what I owned them and they said don't worry about it. They said it would be another 10 minutes and they could have my food out. I left and won't be back.

Bad in every way. It started when my wife and i pulled the chairs out from our table to sit down, and our hands stuck to the filthy chairs. Then sat for half an hour waiting for food while disinterested staff stood around. Had to ask for coffee twice, were never offered refills although we had to sit there for an hour.

This place is within walking distance of my house, and I eat here often on the weekend. It's family run, tiny, and the food is good. I go for breakfast, and love the way they make the thick-cut bacon. I don't know how they cook it - deep fried ? Slow cooked ? Dunno, but it comes out crispy all through, not hard, just crackly melt-in-your mouth fatty goodness. Breakfast burrito is very good, simple and fresh tasting, comes with bacon and hash browns on the side. The pico de gallo-style fresh salsa is rather sweet, tastes like there is some vinegar too, onion and tomato. Eggs are always right. Good Roasterie coffee. I am not much for pancakes, but theirs look pretty nice. Seating is limited, be ready to wait. I often order to go. The owners are really nice, teenage kids are the waiters usually on weekends. Sometimes they get in the weeds when really busy, but you just need to be patient at a place like this, it's worth it.

  • Beau H.

Food is awesome but if there is any type of rush they are over there heads. The last time I ate here they completely forgot my order so after 25 mins waiting on my food I asked and they came back and asked what I had ordered and said she would cook it right away. I came here a again today hoping to have an better experience than last time and same thing happens. Good food terrible business. They really need to set up a better system for the orders.

I love this place. Its a nice alternative to all those standardized, fake, chain shops you usually find around. What your get here is honest food made by honest people. And if that's not enough, their food is not just honest, but very tasty at the same time! The health-range reaches from fresh Breakfast Burritos that boast tomatoes and cilantro to the delicious Bacon Panwiches (yes, that's bacon in pancakes) that come with syrup and which you probably should not eat all day, every day, even though you'd love to. All that leaves the kitchen is freshly cooked and served by friendly people, sometimes it's the owners themselves or their family. The interior is unpretentious but cosy and I always feel right at home when I grab my breakfast here. They only have few tables, but if weather permits, you can also sit outside. If you do have to wait for a table, you can kill time by watching the bacon, egg and hash brown magic happen in the open kitchen, but be aware that this might lead to you ordering more stuff than you had planned before. They also have decent coffee and you get all the above at a fair price. :)

After a long week in the area, we were looking for a nice brunch place to eat before leaving town. Our only regret was wishing we would have eaten there more than once. My wife had the caramel machiato pancakes and she said they were amazing. I had the meat hash brown single serve and it was pretty good. The quality of food there was a lot better than the other breakfast establishments in the area. The other good think was our bill was about half at what you would pay at Cracker Barrel. The only drawback, which isn't a huge deal, is that the server staff looked tired and were short with us a few times. They also had a hard time splitting our small group into 3 separate tickets. So, if you go there understanding that small drawback, you will have an enjoyable breakfast. They have other things on the menu as well, but we will be going back for breakfast whenever we are in the area.

Crushed. The whole idea of the Panwich got me all excited but the end result came up short. If they used better ingredients and had less items pre cooked it would have worked. The family who own the place are really nice, but not as attentive service wise as I would expect from such a small place. I don't need to return

My fiancé and I have been to this restaurant a few times and each time, the breakfast and the service is equally as good. It seems to be a family-owed business and everyone who works there is super polite and helpful. The prices are great and they don't just give you a measly amount. We have tried several things here that are really good but the ones that stand out to us the most are the breakfast burrito and the pancake breakfast sandwich. I love how unique some of their dishes are! Wish they were open on Sundays though!

Back for another great lunch! I only get over to this side of town once in a great while--but when I do and the Wooden Spoon is open, I make a stop! Again, I got the Panwich, and to top off my healthy meal I ordered a single biscuit and gravy (ok, and some extra crispy fries...hey, I've been extra healthy lately, so I indulged!). It was a beautiful day outside and I can't believe none of the folks packing the tables inside (there's not a ton of space, but it's a cozy atmosphere) took advantage of the seating outside so I did, and so did my golden retriever, Ophir. The owner is always so nice, makes quick and funny conversation and even brought out a bowl of iced water for my dog without me asking! My food came out in decent time, they even honored my special meal request, and the food is still craveable! I have always had to get it to go, so it was nice taking the time to eat here and experience their brief but prompt service. If you want a taste of classic food with a twist, run by local salt of the earth people, come to the Wooden Spoon to escape the manic pace of life...and bring a couple friends:)

This place is one of the most awesome hole-in-the-wall finds in JoCo! It's SUPER small, so get there early. The coffee is good, they serve the local Roasterie. It's family-owned and the family is really nice. They have no problem accommodating people with allergies- for me gluten-free. I mean, when restaurants accommodate gluten-free, it's just amazing to me, that is really generous! I have to say, although my eggs and hash browns were incredible, I did sneak a tiny bite of the caramel macchiato pancake... Holy Cow, that stuff should be illegal!!!!!! Wowzers! If they made that gluten-free, I'd prob take 5 orders! :) Next time in KC I'll have to try back for lunch. Def enjoyed it!

I must have caught them on an off day. I love small little mom and pop shops but this place did not impress. I had eggs sausage and hash browns. Sausage was over cooked on both sides. Eggs and hash were fine. I never saw a waiter after I placed my order. No coffee refill and no check in on how my food was.

Great service - we were in a hurry, and they set up a table outside for us (even though it was a bit chilly) so we wouldn't have to wait long. Great server (John). Food was pretty good, too. Wish we could have had mimosas, though - no liquor license.

This was actually a pretty good breakfast place!! Their menu is a bit limited, but hey I'd rather see a place stick to a few things they do really good than try to branch too far out & then things go downhill! We had the sausage breakfast burrito & the panwich. We both made them a combo for $2.25 with coffee & hashbrowns & not only is that a great deal, but those hashbrowns were seriously some of the best hashbrowns I've ever had!! The burrito was very good & the panwich was fine....as expected....but I'd probably try something else more exciting next time. We would totally come here again if out this way!

I had a great experience at this small cafe. The vibe is low key, is wasn't crowded or loud. Was in the mood for breakfast but ended up ordering from the lunch side of the menu after seeing a panini served to another table across the way. I ended up getting the Ero Italiano panini with a side of fries. They were out of the sour dough bread, but I was ok with the wheat bread it was served on. My water and coffee drinks were refilled quite often, the staff was very nice. Food was out to table in a fairly short amount of time. Will defiantly go back to this establishment while in KC for sure!b

I was pumped to try the panwich (bacon and eggs between a pancake sandwich), but it turned out to be pretty bland and disappointing. The bacon inside was almost non existent so essentially it was a tasteless pancake with a side of eggs. Also, for only having about 8 tables in the joint the service was very inattentive. We sat for about 15-20 min before anyone bothered to take our order, while 4+ workers stood behind the counter. As for the has brown casserole, I've had better. Definitely wouldn't say it was anything to write home about. Won't go out of my way to this place in the future.

I would love to tell you how the food was here...but the best I can do is tell you that it looked good. We had a party of 4...no tables available but we were the only ones waiting the host told us 10 min wait...no problem. Then they got busy...a bunch of folks came in...and after the THIRD table was sat in front of us I asked "don't you go in order of arrival?" Nope. After another 30 mins of waiting...for a total of 40...we left went to Big Biscuit and it was terrific!

A little hole-in-the-wall breakfast and lunch restaurant, this place offers breakfast that will make you want to go out of your way for. Across from JCCC on Quivera (by the College Blvd intersection), this unassuming place has definitely caught our attention. Wanting to try something different than the average IHOP or even First Watch, we discovered The Wooden Spoon was close to where we live, and, according to the reviews on Yelp! we decided to give this place a try. We had been wanting to for a while, but it always seemed as if we wanted to get breakfast on a Sunday, which they are not open that day of the week. The Wooden Spoon offers an intimate (small) dining area with about 10 or less tables. Nothing glorious, but our server pointed out we may not want the table close to the door due to drafts, which was nice and we selected another table. Though not packed, The Wooden Spoon definitely had customers. For breakfast I selected the Fluffy 3-egg omelet which came with 4 fillings. I chose: Applewood Bacon, Pico de Gallo, Jalapeño, and Vermont Cheddar. I was feeling spicy with the cold weather we are having. I chose the biscuit for my bread instead of the sourdough, white, or wheat toast with a side of their gravy. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito, fried chimichanga style, and it came with shredded hash browns. After eating this delicious breakfast we decided we will definitely come back! The price is great and makes it worth going there rather than the chain places. The food was excellent. By omelet was indeed fluffy and the Pico tasted great! That biscuit though! It made me wish ordered the Biscuits and Gravy as my entire meal. Not that the omelet wasn't one of the best omelet I've eaten out at a restaurant, but that biscuit was buttery, not too soft (NOT mushy), and melted in my mouth. The gravy wasn't overpowering sausage but had the right amount. It was creamy and tasted like it was homemade. My boyfriend's hash browns were to die for and his breakfast chimichanga was very tasty. We left very satisfied, full but not too full. We plan to try them for lunch soon!

The best pancake in town!! Great service too- our server went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. Latte was very good- beans were from Costa Rica. My husband got the hash browns and biscuits and gravy and he loved them too. We will be back!!!!! Visit this great little place! Only recommendation is to add curb appeal and better interior.

Stopped in here after looking for something within 5 miles of where we were staying with good reviews. We were not let down at all! I got the panwich which is a pancake sandwich with bacon & eggs. Amazing! Genius! My dad got the Philly cheesesteak. He ate every bite & said the flavors were amazing. Mom got a create your own panini with turkey, roast beef, provolone, green peppers & green onions. With a garlic basil mayo which she used even the extra they gave her. We also tried their Caramel machiatto pancake which were like a desert, very rich and had an espresso flavor to it. Now it is a small little cafe so it's great place for a breakfast/lunch date.

My fiancé and I came to The Wooden Spoon 30 minutes before they closed. The man at the counter was most friendly, and promptly got our drinks and sandwiches. We ordered the Italiano Panini and the Classic Cheese Steak, and a side of fries. The specialty sauce was was a kind of freedom I have never tasted. The Italiano was cooked to perfection, after the first bite I immediately thought "This has GOT to be KC's best sandwich". I am not big on Cheese Steak sandwiches and even this blew me away. The seasoned fries were the right kind of crunchy and soft as the same time. We stayed a little longer to chat with the man who was interesting and explained the story of his restaurant which made me love this little place more. I give this sandwich shop 5 stars because after working in two sandwich shops myself this was both charming and cooked by sandwich speciality hands. He was closing shop and gave us free Roasterie coffee's to go which made this lunch even more perfect. Please, give this small shop a chance. I promise you won't be disappointed!!!

I had to stop by JCCC again today so after hearing about the pancake breakfast sandwich thing after I was there yesterday, I figured it was worth another stop. I also got an order of the hash brown casserole. The hash brown casserole was delicious. Loaded with flavor and the hash browns were perfectly cooked. I got the small order and it was plenty! The pancake sandwich thing was ok. It really needs some flavor. Salt and pepper the eggs while they are cooking would be a huge plus. The pancake was bland. It is very filling and you will probably be good just ordering it. The place was busy when I stopped today and service was a little slower. If you are on a timed lunch, calling your order in might be a good idea. They also forgot my hash brown casserole when they brought me my pancake sandwich thing, but cooked an order up and brought it out. I think they just really need to develop a system and get a little organized to overcome these issues. They did give me the casserole for free, but there will reach a point where customers care more about getting their order in a timely manner and correct instead of getting free food. Great that they are proactive in correcting problems, eliminate the problems and the profit margin goes up! :) I am really a fan of this place overall. I will be back for the sandwiches as they are incredibly good. This restaurant also uses Yelp, they have a check in deal and a $10 for $5 coupon. Although the sandwich prices are a little high, with the deals, it makes it much more of a value.

A small family owned restaurant that serves amazing food. They only have 6 tables so you may have to wait, but it's worth it. If you are in a hurry get it to go or call ahead rather than leaving a bad comment. Great food and great staff, will absolutely come back!

The Wooden Spoon has good food, but they need additional square footage. I went on a Saturday morning and the joint was packed. I got my breakfast to go. The waiting area is a hallway with chairs. I spoke with the owner and she told me they were originally a catering gig, serving food just happened. They need a bigger place.

Small place. Small menu. The breakfast burrito was very good...fresh tasting. They have like 5 different hot sauces to choose from, including sriracha The panwich (pancake for bread of a bacon and egg sandwich) was sliced into cute little triangles and served with pancake syrup. It was bacon poor but the egg was cooked just right. This is sharable size. They do not overlap breakfast and lunch. Lacking that option made me sad because I wanted a sandwich and fries but settled. Maybe I can use that Yelp checkin coupon some other day. The owner (I suspect) was nice and helpful...and super confident. Kudos. This place is no frills. Small tables situated around a cold door. Dress warm. Closed on Sunday...found out the hard way.

One word to describe the place: TINY If you're coming here to dine, expect there to be very limited seating. Suggestion: Don't sit at the table next to the door. People are frequently walking in and out because the place doesn't have enough seating to meet their demand. Knowing that if you sit there, you will be cold. It was extremely unpleasant sitting there. The menu itself is relatively small. They serve breakfast and lunch. Their items are fairly unique and will have you asking the server what it is. Our server was a young male who was fairly knowledgeable about the menu. Ready to answer anything you have. I ordered a orange juice to start off. Unfortunately they don't serve fresh orange juice. It's basically sunny D with ice. Who serves "OJ" with ice?? The meal that I ordered was their most interesting by the description. The panwich. Combines America's love of things in sandwich form, but similarly like the McGriddle. 2 pancakes with egg and bacon sandwiched. Cut in pizza like portions with a cup of syrup to dip your panwich. I ordered it with probably the worst hash browns I've ever ate. They were extremely over done and nearly burnt. Usually hash browns are a bit soft, greasy and a little bit crispy on the outside. These were dried and nearly burnt. The overall Yelp review suggests that this place is pretty good. My experience... I've had better. Way better. Their ideas are interesting, but the execution could use some work.

First time at the restaurant this morning after driving by it since it opened. Ordered coffee and single order of biscuits and gravy. Coffee was good although I wasn't offered a refresh/second cup until I was given the bill. Biscuits were good. Fluffy, but couldn't really assess the flavor when covered with lukewarm 'floury' microwaved gravy. The gravy tasted of raw flour, and yes, I saw the cook warming it up in the microwave oven. Such potential. Such a disappointment.

I'd give this place 4.5 stars, but I'll round up to 5 because I love supporting a little local place like this. It's open for breakfast and lunch only; closes at 2pm. First off, this place is very small - four tables, so I recommend carryout, as I assume it can probably get a little busy around lunchtime. That being said, I've only had breakfast here, and breakfast was fantastic. Immediately upon entering, you realize how fantastically nice the people are. They really seem like they WANT your business, and they APPRECIATE your business. That's increasingly lacking in the dining experience these days, and I really appreciate it whenever I see it. After perusing the menu, I decided on a bacon breakfast burrito and has browns. It took between 5-10 minutes to make, but that's because everything is fresh made. Even the eggs are cracked before getting thrown on the grill. The Pico is fresh made and fantastic. The hash browns are the good, crumbled kind seasoned just perfectly with, it would seem, just salt and pepper. The prices here are great - a single breakfast burrito is just over $3, and it can fill you up nicely. Burrito + hash browns would set you back about $5 in total, and fill you up even more.

After my first visit, when I'd had the panwich, I went back two Sundays in a row to try to satiate my craving for another. I think there's something seriously wrong with my short-term memory because I'd specifically noted on my first visit that they close at 2:00 and don't open on Sundays. The second Sunday that I drove up to a closed shop, my son said, "didn't we do this same thing last Sunday?" Why, yes. Yes, we did. So, during my holidays off, I finally made my second visit with a girlfriend. I had another panwich and hashbrowns, which were quite delicious, again. Another thing I enjoyed was the different non-sweetened iced tea flavor options. I had Earl Gray. It was fresh-brewed and so good. The owner was chatty with us and told us about their quick growth. She was proud of her made-to-order philosophy. She was also baking some brioche-type bread for a New Year family gathering and offered us a sample of it. I asked her to repeat the name of it, but I've forgotten. It was flaky pastry with many layers and lots of butter. Piping fresh from the oven, it was heaven. She said she doesn't make it for the shop because of the time-consuming nature of it. Too bad, I'd rather have that over a cupcake any day. Come visit. I like this quaint place.

I walked into the wooden spoon ahead of a couple, and was shortly followed by a group of three. The waiter initially mistook the first two of us for a group of three, but proceeded to ignore me when corrected. I was left to sit at a dirty table, and both groups that came in after me had their orders taken before my table was even cleaned. I walked without ever having been addressed by the waiter and will never return.

GREAT food. The wait to get seated and served was about an hour on a Saturday. It's a small place and fairly busy. The employees were kind, helpful and conscious of the fact that we had been waiting a while. Would go again if I weren't super hungry.

Service slow. Over easy eggs served broken and like warm. A long wait for coffee. This place was everything a breakfast place should not be.

Awesome sandwiches here! Couldn't decide which was better the Italian or the Cheese steak. We got both and each had a half. Very small place but wasn't very busy for a Friday at 11:30AM. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Wanted to try as many new breakfast places while my wife and I both had time off from work. The Wooden Spoon had been on our list to try for a few months and we finally made it for a morning nosh. This is a family owned tiny slice of real estate near Tequila Harry's on College and Quivira. Did you ever sleep over at a friend's house and their mom made an awesome breakfast in the morning? That's Wooden Spoon. Food was terrific - hashbrown casserole (order a double) is made with homemade ranch dressing and the breakfast burritos (again, order a double) are made with in-house salsa. The only thing preventing five stars was the slow rate of serving the food. There was only one other table when we arrived but it took about 35 minutes to get the food. The chef/owner apologized and said there had been a mishap in the kitchen and comped us with some homemade Filipino breakfast rolls (delicious). Best news of all was the 12 dollar chit for a comparable amount of food to First Watch and other breakfast locales. We would definitely go back and try something else.

Lovely little place to have breakfast! Food was very good and the owner and staff are really nice. A really friendly place!!

This is the kind of place that focuses on less items that they do well, rather than many that are just okay. A perfect little breakfast spot when you're looking for something different and charming! Owner ran and operated, friendly and inviting!

Time for an update/upgraded review: Yesterday I had the Philly on Wheat (go ahead and order the wheat bread). The combo with fries and large drink was right at $10 . IF you're cheap like me, that sounds pricy. But bear in mind, this sandwich is large. Could feed 2, depending on appetite; and the bread/bun is house-baked. Order with that in mind. But do order! I added some of their garlic - basil dipping sauce. Tremendous flavor. Even without the dipping sauce (which is fantastic on the fries--for that matter, it's fantastic on a fork). Can't wait to try the breakfast...and the homemade (from scratch) soups. I encourage you to stop and try the food here. It's homemade with an enormous amount of care. This is the kind of place I predict will grow famously, and I'll look back and say, "I remember this place when ..." Go here. Eat happily ever after.

The owners must have seen some of the bad feedback about the service, and taken it to heart. I went here for lunch today and had their Philly Steak Sandwich. It was (by FAR) the best I've ever had. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the Espinaca Philly because were out of the sauce. But WOW - the flavor was on point. It was piping hot, and nice and cheesy. The bread was fresh and grilled. But let's go back to the beginning... I had a fresh-brewed iced tea (flavored) within the first couple of minutes. There were only a couple of other patrons, so I don't know how it is when they are slammed - but the service was excellent the whole time. I spoke with the owner/operators, and they were very kind. They take great pride in what they have to offer, which is not fast food. I had the feeling of being welcomed into someone's home for a meal. So I wasn't expecting everything to be ready and waiting to flip onto a plate. Everything was made to order. I think that's a nice touch. The only thing about this place that mildly rubs me wrong is that it has so much more potential. I think they are missing out on repeat business because of the pricing. I think the quality of the food is worth the price, but most college kids and corporate lunchers are trying to have a quick lunch with drink and side included, for less than $9.99. I spent just over $13 for a entree, side and a drink. Everything is charged separately. That said, you are definitely getting a freshly-prepared meal - and the quality is fantastic. Furthermore, the people who run it are absolutely delightful. I tried their Caramel Machiato Pancakes just to make my lunch obnoxious (for another $5.50). They were so delicious! So I'm looking forward to having breakfast here with my girlfriend on the weekend. I suspect it will be hot spot during those hours, so we might have to wait a little longer... If your pants are not on fire, maybe that's okay. Just play some words with friends, or crush some candy.

Excellent family run restaurant with fresh options that aren't afraid to stray from the typical greasy spoon menu. Limited space so be prepared to wait if you show up at a busy time but they're generally quick at turning tables over. They're constantly experimenting with new dishes as well so they give you plenty of reason to come back. Highly recommended!

I've eaten here several times since they opened. The food has always been great. The owners seem to have found their grove and food comes out much faster now. They have also added a few additional small tables, which helps as the space is pretty tin. Overall, the paninis and breakfast burritos can't be beat.

This place is awesome. If you have ever been to a small town dinner. Then you know how it's super personal and they make you feel right at home. We'll come to this place cuz it's in OP but it straight up feels like home in a small town. The food was so great everything was fresh and tasting wise it's legit. You won't regret coming here to get breakfast. The eggs where cooked perfectly and I got the croissant with beacon and I ask for the eggs sunny side up and they where perfectly runny. I also ordered hash browns a little crispy with pico and OMG it was so awesome. This is a place to stop and relax and enjoy the great food and company. Thank you for the full tummy! :)

Very good! They make it feel really home-y inside and I felt like I was welcomed to a friends house for breakfast! Really good vegetarian options as well. Enjoyed their coffee..perfectly blended and still pretty bold. Hash browns were killer!

My and my fiancé are always looking for a fantastic breakfast place, and we were very pleased with The Wooden Spoon. We had heard great things about them and they lived up to it. Very friendly service. The owner took our order and bantered with us, treated us like family. The cook is originally from Philippines, but she takes American breakfast and knocks it out of the park. I ordered the acclaimed "Hashbrown Casserole," shredded potatoes, red onion, sausage and bacon in individual ceramic dishes. Fantastic! My fiancé ordered the biscuits and gravy and there's no doubt that they were homemade. With everything, our whole order, drinks and extra sides included, was only ~$13.

My wife and I stopped by for a small breakfast. At first my wife was concerned, she is vegetarian. The owner came by to take our order and she said she could change anything to veggie only. We got the hash brown casserole, double, with veggies and no meat. It was awesome! The owner was so nice and accommodating. She really wants to cook what her customers want and seemed flexible about menu items. Very affordable and friendly.

I came here around ten on a Sunday to meet some girlfriends for breakfast. We snagged the only four top and ordered coffee. They brew Roasterie coffee. I ordered scrambled eggs and sausage. The eggs were served with fresh and tasty pico de gallo. The topping took the eggs from basic to eggcellent. Okay, legit, that was lame. Anyways, my meal was less than $5, which was awesome. This is obviously a family run business. The service was great and.the food solid. If I lived closer I would definitely come back. P.S. We got complimentary cream puffs after our meal. Uhh, Yum!!

Good biscuits and gravy and soft-scrambled eggs at this tiny breakfast spot. Service is prompt and friendly, but I don't fell like it would be worth a long wait to eat here. The menu is pretty small as well - if you are a low carb person, eggs are really your only option. Love Roasterie coffee, though.

Tuesday's breakfast at The Wooden Spoon was the yummy breakfast burrito with the freshly made pico. I'm totally in love with the burrito but I think I'm addicted to the pico! I changed a little by having slices of bacon instead of the crumbles of bacon in the burrito. I think that's going to be my new favorite. With Tina cooking the food fresh it's more like eating at home than at a restaurant. The quality is amazing! All of the tables had customers so the word is definitely out about The Wooden Spoon. The service was fast so we were in and out in about thirty minutes.

I had the Philly. I've never been that huge a fan of a Philly Cheesesteak, but this was delicious. The dipping sauce for the fries was also excellent. The service was top notch and the owner is very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back.

drove past this place 100's of times and for some reason it caught my eye. Perhaps its because I'm always looking for another breakfast place besides Denny's Ihop, and First watch. Went in on a Monday morning about 8:30 had the whole place to ourselves for a bit. The menu is smaller but that's nice for a place that seems to make all food fresh. I had the panwich- yummy yummy, and tasted the biscuits and gravy- Yummy Yummy! Good tasting coffee, friendly server and CHEAP CHEAP food! Small place, not sure who crowded it would be on a Saturday, but seemed very homey. All and All a GREAT place for a good cheap breakfast.

We attempted to have breakfast here this morning- waited over 40 minutes for food, the table next to us left before their food came after seeing what was brought to our table. My husband had the panwich- the pancake was burnt and the egg yolk was discolored- eww. I got an omelette - the bacon in it was saturated in grease- my toast tasted like burnt cooking oil- I actually spit it out--and we ordered the hash brown casserole to try it and it was cold and full of bacon grease- we left without eating---one of the worst restaurant experiences we have ever had--

Food was good, service no so.... Check out the other reviews and you will see I am not alone here. This is a family place with the kids waiting on tables and the mom is the only cook. I would only go if you don't mind waiting for awhile.

GREAT Philly... Good panwich, good hash brown casserole, ok biscuits and gravy, very nice people and decent customer service. Place is very small, but the food is worth it. The pricing is maybe little too reasonable :) I will be returning.

After a quick search for "breakfast KC," this holiday morning... With hopes of 1st finding a place open, 2nd... Someplace we hadn't been... With good reviews... We set our aim at Wooden Spoon. I admit, when we first walked in, i almost turned around. My impression was it was more a deli style sandwich joint than a cozy breakfast room. Luckily, my bf talked me into giving it a chance. After a bit of an awkward start figuring out protocol (order at the counter or sit and be served) we got it all figured out. Sit and let the family aka owners treat you as one of their own. While we didn't meet the whole family, we met the woman who we soon discovered, is the amazing cook. Her two sons... Darling as they are helpful... Albeit shy... Were alongside mom this 4th of July. Can't say enough about the authentic friendliness and willingness to please displayed by Tina. But as we foodies know... The friendliness only goes so far. What about the food? I was a bit discouraged, as I'm a vegetarian and there was a lot of stuff with meat in it. I mentioned to Tina that i wished I could partake in the hash brown casserole. She quickly and gladly offered to make me my own casserole sans meat! She specially prepared my eggs, offered me the delicious addition of pico, and the most refreshing Filipino juice blend. It was PERFECT. The bacon my bf ordered looked so good... Even I was eyeing it. Hidden gem... Literally... Hidden. But don't let the first impression be your only one. As a fellow yelper noted... The signage is yet to be in place. Owner, Tina, is honest about her newness to the restaurant world... The lack of signage is part of her "soft opening" approach. After years in the kitchen and a few more as a caterer... The restaurant plunge is her next venture into sharing her gift of cooking. Final words... Eat here! Great prices, great people, excellent food and coffee.

We tried breakfast here the other day and it was amazing! I wasn't sure if it could surpass the Philly cheese steak that she makes but it did! My husband and I both ordered the breakfast burrito and we split an order of hash town casserole. I highly recommend them both! We will definitely be adding this into our breakfast rotation!

Delicious fresh, new taste for Johnson County. The homemade pico de gallo is a must!! My mother asked about a healthy catering option for her workplace, the owner proceeded to whip up an entree for her to try! Make the trip, this place is a keeper!

Oh, the Wooden Spoon. I wanted to try this place because of the glowing reviews and close proximity to my house, however my experience at WS has me wondering what I'm missing? Now, the food was good, but most everything else was awkward. I'm giving three stars for food but one star for service. WS is one of the strangest restaurants I've ever visited. There are maybe five tables crammed into a space that, I'm guessing, once served as a take-out lobby for a previous establishment (maybe pizza resto). An empty refrigerated food case divides the dining area from the kitchen. There is a random Tuscan-like mural on one wall and the other wall is covered in a slat wall display (for using hooks to display retail items) but it's completely empty. I believe the restaurant is run by a family. Mom is the cook, dad is front-of-the house, a teenage son and pre-teen daughter take orders and run food. One thing for sure, mom knows how to cook. I was feeling all sandwich-y, so I ordered a Create-your-own sammy, once served I discovered that it could've fed an army. The meat was freshly shaved. The bread was good. Overall it was good. I maybe would've dressed it better - salt, pepper, vinegar, oil...more fixins. As it came out - tomato, lettuce, mayo. My husband ordered Biscuits and Gravy. I really liked his B&G, the gravy had good flavor. My husband and I both ordered iced tea, mine came out quite brown, my husband's came out a very light brown (barely dirty looking water) - we laughed about it because it was so strangely obvious. It was as though we had two completely different drinks. The woman at the table next to us raved and raved about the hash brown casserole. Why I didn't try this I'm not sure? It looked delicious. The service was awkward. Each item had it's own plate (my sandwich, my fries, hubby's B&G). Each plate and drink were delivered one at a time. The server was nice but super shy and didn't make any eye contact, we had no rapport with him whatsoever. Toward the end of our meal the dad came from behind the counter, cup 'o joe in hand, to chat with the customers. He wanted to tell us that he had some errands to run. OK. You know when a cook hears over and over that her potato salad recipe is delish so she should start a restaurant? Well this mom did start a restaurant. The problem, there is no polish to the WS. I want them to do well, the food is certainly good, but they've got to get their service together. Go to another restaurant, study the service, the timing, the delivery and see how it's done. You're so close.

We came here for the first time today and it definitely won't be the last time! First of all, the owners, Wayne and Tina make you feel like family. The only way to describe the food is outstanding! My wife and I each got a breakfast burrito, and they were better than the ones I make at home! My wife got the hash brown casserole and it was superb! I got regular hash browns and they were perfectly cooked and seasoned, which is a rare find! I tried some of the hash brown casserole and know what I'll be getting the next time, they were really addictive. We each got coffee to drink, which was from a local roaster, The Roasterie, absolutely perfect! We liked it so much we went to their shop and bought some beans to take home! Can't wait to come back!

After reading all the reviews, my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a chance since it is right near my house. We were quite disappointed. We arrived around noon to the almost uncomfortably small dining area-6 tables. The chairs were super uncomfortable (think metal patio furniture) and it was freezing cold. There seemed to be only 3 people working, one being a 12 year old girl. There were only 3 other tables, yet the service was terrible. We had to ask several times to get coffee, only to find out it was in the thermos over on a table. The coffee was not good, tasted pretty old. It took about 20 minutes to get our food-but we got ours long before a table who was there before us. There was no rhyme or reason for who was waited on. My food was quite bland-I had an egg/cheese/bacon croissant and it had no flavor. My boyfriend's burrito was fine, but nothing special-could've gotten something similar at a fast food place. Overall we just had a very unsatisfying experience. A couple pros-The lady was very nice, she comped our drinks for waiting so long. Also the food is quite cheap. It just isn't a place run like a business, and it's weird to have a 12 year old take your order!

Great little place, although I have to say it didn't impress me too much when I walked in the door -- it has that mom-and-pop lack of decor & that breakfast-grill smell, you know, the lingering presence of bacon past -- not unpleasantly strong, but enough to notice. OK, it's a tiny diner, the grill is in full view of the front door, I can deal with it. From there, it just got better. They have fantastic breakfast burritos. I got one to-go for under four bucks, and it was a perfect size for me, although a big eater might want to order two of them. It was AWESOMELY good, with fluffy scrambled eggs that had obviously been freshly cracked after I ordered, and a wonderful pico de gallo, also fresher than I've had just about anywhere else except my own kitchen. All this freshness should tip you off that service won't be lightning-fast, but it's worth the wait... which wasn't too bad anyway, I happened to be there with only one other customer, so I waited less than 5 minutes. And the guy behind the counter couldn't have been friendlier. He offered a seat & a glass of water while I was waiting for my to-go order; I have never had that happen for a takeout order before. So, highest marks possible on service. I'll be back soon, maybe on the weekend, to try the hash-brown casserole.

Sadly, many people have never really had properly prepared hash brown potatoes--so many places do them wrong. But if you go to the Wooden Spoon, you will get a chance to taste what you have missed! And that is just the start of what you can get at this outstanding gem in KC. The straight-up hash browns are good, but the hash brown casserole may be even better. My omellette was perfectly cooked, with all kinds of flavor, and topped off by the pico de gallo which was superb. The coffee was also good and, as noted by others, the staff was incredibly friendly. Go here!!!

Great service- family owned business. My daughter loved the omelette and my son loved the pancake sandwich. With the yelp coupon all 5 of us ate for $10! I will definitely go back again. I want to try the hash browns and the sandwiches at lunch. Wish they had more tables.

A hidden gem. A small town, family owned, different pace kind of gem. Make you slow down and taste your coffee and feel like you're one of the family, place. Good food. Welcoming and kind hosts (family run business = the kids are there too). Our 6yo son LOVED the bacon egg panwich. I did too. Hubby scarfed down the Philly. Across the table there were raves about the breakfast burrito and hash brown casserole. I don't know how many cups of coffee I had, it never hit bottom. There isn't much room, and everything is made fresh - so account for this. If you're in a rush, call in your order. If you have a large party, call to make sure they have seating. (6 is a large party here) Then, savor the relaxed family setting and yummy, yummy food!

The owner was very nice. I order a breakfest burrito and biscuits and gravy. I asked if the buscuits and gravy was home made, she said yes. They were sams club caned gravy and sams buscuits. Not good. The burrito was great but small. I hope this place sticks with what only they make and not cut corners. I will try them again.

What a great breakfast location! I was dropping my car off for repairs at the autobody shop next door and was wondering if there was anywhere nearby I could grab a bite to eat. I walked in around 10:15 and noticed that while the restaurant was small, it was very clean and very comfortable. I ordered a double of biscuits and gravy and it was amaaaazing. The owners were extremely nice and friendly, which is a welcome change from owners who make you feel like you're just another dollar coming through their door. If you are looking for a quiet, personal, small owned coffee shop (with great food!) I definitely recommend The Wooden Spoon. You won't regret it!

The food at the Wooden Spoon is excellent! So much tastier than the other chain breakfast joints in town. And very reasonably priced, especially if you "make it a meal". The service is horrible. The first time we tried this place the service was so bad that we thought it just had to be an off day - one of those days where nothing goes right. So we tried it again before solidifying an opinion: and the service is horrible. Both visits were on a Sat morning. The first visit they lost our order...so we waited and waited for our breakfast to arrive and when it did, it wasn't what we ordered. We ate it anyways (and it was delicious!) To Wayne's (the owner) credit, he gave us a $5 gift card without us complaining. The payment process was painful (don't try to pay with Amex). There's a little table with sauces, coffee fixins, etc, that you have to get up and scout out what you're looking for. If it isn't on the table you have to wait at the counter to ask for it. They don't come to you - you go to them. The second visit was also bad. We again received food and drinks we didn't order. However, the food we got was fantastic. The people that run this place are super nice and friendly. This restaurant would greatly benefit from hiring someone, a non-family member, someone paid to do a good job, to run the dining room. The food here is too good to not continue to support this place....we're just going to do take-out instead. And check our orders before we leave.

So apparently I've worked around the corner of this gem for the past two years and never knew it.. Needless to say, I am very glad I stumbled across it. I ordered their Il Manzo and couldnt be more pleased! Their Basil Garlic sauce is to die for.. I will definitely be going back. I'll add this to my list of regular lunch spots from this day forward.

I have been friends with these wonderfully caring owners of The Wooden Spoon for several years now....and honestly I NEVER get tired of eating this women's food! It doesn't matter what she makes because I know we will enjoy every bite! I have had so many of her creations that it is so hard to pick a favorite(I get to be her guinea pig sometimes!!!)! BUT alas, I think it is the....(inserting drum roll) PHILLY CHEESESTEAK!!!!!! It is cooked to perfection every time!! FRESH, hot, gooey, savory, delectable .....ok now my stomach is grumbling and mouth is watering! My 15yo daughter is also IN LOVE with her food and Philly Cheesesteak! And talking about getting MORE than what you pay for! You may think you can finish a FULL size of these babies but I always end up bringing some of it home! Which is great for the late night snack!!! LOL The homemade sauces are to DIE for!! Please don't underestimate this little gem even though they don't have a "sign" up yet or its a little hard to find...because once you find it you will keep it on your list of must eat places when you are looking for a GENUINE good place to eat and sit and have a relaxing cup of coffee and enjoy the great company of the owners Tina and Wayne. They are the most hospitable, caring and selfless people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and calling them my friends. I know I am a bit partial since they are my friends....but I have seen Tina and Wayne grow this business from a couple of FOOD DAYS at our previous job to what The Wooden Spoon has grown into today and this has definitely been a TRUE labor of love for their entire family! I can't wait to see what the future has for them and to see their business flourish. It is located on the corner of College Blvd and Quivira right next door to Tequila Harry's. --Hurry, what are you waiting for!!!??

Took my son to the Wooden Spoon for breakfast after a soccer game. I had the breakfast burrito and hash browns, very good. The boy had a Panwich. Loved it. The owner was great, very social and sense of humor. First visit for us, but felt like we went to our aunt and uncles for breakfast. Solid 4.5 but I rounded up too.

I reallllllly wanted to like this place. I saw all of the great reviews and it's right down the street from our house, but our experience was just awful. The reviewers are right...the family that runs this little place is very nice but the service today was almost non-existent. When we arrived, it was busy--all of the 5 tables were full. We waited for a little bit and then I order a cappuccino, which was quite average. We then ordered our meal, and waited for a table to open up. Once we sat down we waited (and waited and waited and waited) for our food. We waited for 45 minutes for three simple items: an egg sandwich on croissant, hash browns (they were out of the hashbrown casserole) and biscuits and gravy. While we were waiting, I had my cappuccino, but the person I was dining with had no drink and he was never offered one from start to finish of our entire meal. When the food finally started nearing our table, it was given to the table next to us. The other diners also happened to order biscuits and gravy, so they dug in. The servers (who are the children of the owner, and very young--maybe age 9-12) then realized it was our order. We were annoyed because we had waited FOREVER and now had to keep waiting for them to re-make the biscuits and gravy. When the food finally came it was good--but nothing exceptional. It was one of those times that the food may have tasted better if you weren't so irritated by the awful service. The owner came over and apologized for the wait. You could tell she genuinely felt bad. Her son told us they would take 25% off our bill--which was nice because we never actually complained, but the problem is that I had already paid with credit card, so I didn't get the discount and I wasn't going to say anything because I honestly just wanted to leave.

Highly recommend the excellent hashbrown casserole; looked and tasted great; best I've ever had! The coffee here is very good, too! The mini cupcake - got chocolate on chocolate: DELICIOUS! The chef owner, Tina, introduced herself to me -- very warm and friendly. As I was eating, we were talking about the breakfast burrito. She brought me a sample of her homemade pico. Wow! It was delicious! Tomorrow I'll be having the breakfast burrito's. Can't wait!

Great hidden gem. Loved the omlet and coffee..wasn't the hashbrown I expected, but ok. Always look forward to supporting a local, family owned business and I will be back!

The Mexi-Cheesesteak is fantastic. I accidentally ordered a double instead of a single but am honestly very happy about it because I can have more later. The fries and dipping sauce are a must. Staff is very very friendly! Will definitely return (and very soon) Highly recommend!

A coworker and I talked about coming here the last few months and finally made it in today. There's patio seating in front of the restaurant and 8 tables inside. I expected a bigger dining room. Plainly decorated, 50's & 60's music, and a neighborhood diner/deli feel. Breakfast and lunch served until 2pm. The menu offers about 7 main breakfast items and 5 lunch sandwiches. This isn't really all that limiting with sides and combinations. I ordered a 3 egg omelet which comes with your choice of 3 toppings, cheese is extra. It included toast. I added sausage patties. Omg. The sausage took my back to my grandma's kitchen! A simple omelet packed with flavor. My coworker got hashbrown casserole with pancakes. I tried the casserole and I agreed when she said it's like a twice baked potato...so yummy! Her pancakes were light and fluffy. She says delicious! Friendly and clean. We'll be back.
